The relationship between theory, research, and evidence-based practice (EBP) is one of interrelatedness. Theory serves as the foundation for EBP by providing a framework from which to build upon. It provides us with an understanding of why a certain phenomenon occurs and allows us to develop hypotheses about how to best address it. Research is then conducted in order to test these theories and gain empirical evidence that either supports or disproves them. This research can take place through various methods such as experiments, surveys, or case studies. The findings from this research can then be used when developing evidence-based practice interventions (Sackett et al., 2000).
For instance, if we use the example of problem behavior exhibited by children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), research has found that positive reinforcement strategies are effective methods for decreasing problematic behaviors while also increasing desired behaviors (Kruger & Seltzer, 2019). Specifically, token economies have been shown to increase motivation among ASD students and lead to more successful outcomes (Matson et al., 2018). This finding was based on existing theoretical assumptions related to operant conditioning which suggests that behavior can be modified through reinforcement techniques. Thus, utilizing token economies as part of an intervention plan would provide practitioners with an evidence-based solution for addressing problem behaviors in their clients with ASD.
In summary, theory provides us with the theoretical foundations necessary for conducting meaningful research which in turn informs our decision making processes when designing interventions or treatments in EBP contexts. Without incorporating all three elements into our work we put ourselves at risk for basing decisions solely off inadequate information or speculation rather than being able to draw on valid scientific conclusions that have stood up against rigorous testing procedures over time.
