My philosophy of nursing practice is based on the belief that nurses are holistic caregivers who promote health and well-being. I believe that nurses should advocate for their patients and work to create a more just and equitable healthcare system.

I have applied the following middle range nursing theories to my philosophy of nursing practice:

  • The Neuman Systems Model: This theory views the patient as a system that is constantly interacting with its environment. The nurse’s role is to help the patient maintain stability and adapt to change.
  • The Roy Adaptation Model: This theory also views the patient as a system that is constantly adapting to its environment. The nurse’s role is to help the patient identify and cope with stressors.
  • The Orem Self-Care Deficit Theory: This theory states that people have a need for self-care, and that nurses can help people meet their self-care needs.

I have also considered the interdisciplinary theory of Complexity Science. This theory views the world as a complex system that is constantly changing. The nurse’s role is to help patients navigate this complex system and make informed decisions about their health.

I believe that these theories provide a framework for understanding the complex needs of patients and for developing effective nursing interventions. I am still refining my philosophy of nursing practice, but I believe that these theories have helped me to develop a more holistic and patient-centered approach to care.

Here are some refinements that I would make to my thinking and explanations:

  • I would emphasize the importance of collaboration and teamwork in nursing practice. Nurses cannot provide care in isolation, and they need to work with other healthcare professionals to meet the needs of their patients.
  • I would also emphasize the importance of advocacy in nursing practice. Nurses need to speak up for their patients and ensure that they receive the care they need.
  • I would also acknowledge the challenges of nursing practice. Nursing is a demanding profession, and nurses need to be supported by their colleagues and employers.

I believe that the interdisciplinary theory of Complexity Science can further inform my philosophy of nursing practice by helping me to understand the complex interactions between patients, families, and healthcare systems. This theory can also help me to develop more effective interventions that take into account the dynamic nature of the healthcare environment.

I am still learning and growing as a nurse, and my philosophy of nursing practice will continue to evolve. However, I believe that the principles outlined above provide a solid foundation for my practice.
