Go to the U.S. Census website (Census.gov) to complete the assignment. Click on the
Explore Data link.
• Click on Explore Data Main, then scroll down and click on Quick Facts. In the “Quick
Facts” section, type in “Demographics” in the topic block and your home city and state
in the next block.
• There should be two sections provided: “2010 Census” and “American Community
Survey.” Click on each of these.
STEP 2: In a few sentences answer the following questions:
• Describe the general characteristics of your community, including median age, race,
ethnicity, income, and education.
• Does the Census data look accurate compared to your experience within your
community? Why do you think the census data does (or does not) seem to accurately
reflect your community?
• Was the level of poverty reported by the census data accurate based on your experience
while living in the community?
