Present your position on a current health-care issue in a one-page paper, following the assignment guidelines below. Your position paper should:
– Be quickly and easily understood.
– Be succinct and clear.
– Appear very professional with the legislator’s name and title on top and your name and your credentials at the bottom.

Currently, there are over 27 million people in the United States who are uninsured due to high costs or lack of employer-sponsored plans (Kaiser Family Foundation 2020). This number is unacceptable and needs to be addressed immediately by our legislators.

In order to expand access, I advocate for increasing subsidies available through the Affordable Care Act so that more people can afford the premiums associated with even basic plans. Additionally, I propose implementing a public option that would allow those who cannot otherwise qualify or afford private health insurance options an affordable way of obtaining coverage without sacrificing quality of care. Such a plan could also incentivize competition within the marketplace leading to better overall value for consumers.

Finally, I suggest eliminating barriers such as pre-existing condition exclusion clauses which prevent individuals from being able to purchase health insurance regardless of their current medical status. Allowing this type of discrimination in a system designed specifically for providing healthcare results in individuals not receiving needed treatments simply because they do not have coverage; something that no one should ever have to face.
