choose a short clip from your favorite TV show in where there is a gender interaction. For example, the scene could show a couple resolving a conflict, friends involved in a romantic talk, a boss and his/her employee discussing about a work issue, siblings taking part in a family argument, etc. After finding your short clip, you will observe the chosen TV interaction without sound. You will then explain the interaction through an analysis of gender non-verbal communication. If possible after you have made your analysis, re-watch the conversation before putting your observations in writing. As part of your written analysis, you need to incorporate at least 8 terms from the list below that correspond from textbook chapter on gender non-verbal communication. Please highlight all the terms you have chosen in your writing. You will be evaluated on how well you apply and analyze terminology. Please review corresponding rubric.

Observation Without Sound:
Without the audio, the interaction appears somewhat tense but also contains elements of their established dynamic. Leslie’s posture is upright and her movements seem direct as she approaches Tom, who is leaning back in his chair with a more relaxed posture. Leslie uses several commanding gestures, pointing towards what I assume is the project and maintaining direct eye contact with Tom for a significant duration. Tom, in contrast, exhibits more fidgeting movements, shifting in his seat and occasionally glancing away from Leslie. He uses smaller, less expansive gestures. At one point, he appears to offer a slight, almost placating smile, which could be interpreted as socially ingratiating behavior. Leslie remains focused and her facial expressions convey seriousness and perhaps a hint of disappointment. There are moments where Leslie leans slightly forward, seeming to emphasize her points, while Tom appears to physically shrink back somewhat. The spatial arrangement suggests Leslie has initiated the interaction and is taking a more assertive stance.
Analysis Incorporating Terms (Post-Audio Review):
After re-watching the scene with sound, my initial observations regarding the power dynamic are largely confirmed. Leslie, in her role as the boss, adopts a dominant social style nonverbally. Her direct eye contact, commanding gestures (pointing and using sharp hand movements), and upright posture all convey authority and her expectation of Tom’s compliance. She is clearly proactive in addressing the issue.
Tom, on the other hand, displays a submissive social style. His leaning back, fidgeting, and less direct gaze suggest a lower status in this specific interaction. His brief, somewhat nervous smile is an example of socially ingratiating behavior, an attempt to appease Leslie and diffuse the situation without directly addressing the core issue. He seems to be reactive to Leslie’s assertive approach.
The interaction also highlights gender-role expectations, although subtly. While Leslie is in a position of authority, some of her nonverbal cues, such as the occasional softening of her facial expressions when Tom offers an excuse (even if she doesn’t accept it), could be interpreted through the lens of societal expectations for women to be somewhat nurturing, even in a professional setting. Tom’s more relaxed and less confrontational demeanor, while also reflecting his subordinate position, could align with some traditional male gender-role expectations that discourage direct confrontation in certain contexts.
The sustained eye contact from Leslie can also be seen as a form of seeking reactivity from Tom, demanding his attention and a response. Tom’s occasional gaze aversion suggests an attempt to avoid this direct engagement. While there isn’t explicit romantic undertones, Tom’s initial slight smile could be a very subtle and quickly dismissed quasi-courtship cue, perhaps a habitual behavior he uses in uncomfortable social situations involving women, even his boss. However, Leslie’s focused and serious demeanor immediately negates any such interpretation, emphasizing the professional nature of the interaction and her lack of interest in anything beyond the work issue. Overall, the nonverbal communication strongly reinforces the hierarchical dynamic and the differing approaches they take to address the conflict.
