How it affects the family and the children around the patient suffering from the disease.
Alzheimer`s disease is a progressive neurologic disorder that causes the brain to shrink (atrophy) and brain cells to die. Alzheimer`s disease is the most common cause of dementia, a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills that affects a person`s ability to function independently. There is no treatment that cures Alzheimer’s disease or alters the disease process in the brain. Medications may temporary improve or slow progression of symptoms. When a family member is diagnosed with Alzheimer`s disease or other dementia, the effect on your entire family can be overwhelming. The diagnosis can trigger a range of emotions including anger, fear, frustration and sadness. There are also many decisions to make about treatment, care, living arrangements, finance and end-of-life care. As a result, conflicts are common.
