Ambulatory and Inpatient Data Sets
Ambulatory and Inpatient Data Sets
Students are expected to research the Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS) and the Uniform Ambulatory Care Data Set (UACDS). After researching the data sets, the student will develop and present a 5-10 slide PowerPoint presentation that includes:
• a description of both data sets
• where they are used (healthcare setting)
• the purpose of the data sets
• describe how the UHDDS impacts the DRGs
• compare and contrast 2 major differences in the UHDDS and UACDS
• a brief synopsis of 4-5 data elements that are collected for each data set
After developing the PPT presentation, you must add voice to the presentation using a multimedia tool of you choosing. Once the multimedia presentation is complete the presentation link must be copied and pasted into the assignment submission area. This assignment is worth 50 points.
Students will be graded on the following:
Description: The UHDDS is a standardized data set used to collect patient-level data on hospital discharges. It provides a common framework for collecting and reporting information about patient demographics, diagnoses, procedures, and other relevant clinical factors.
Where Used:
Purpose:
Impact on DRGs: The UHDDS data is directly used to assign DRGs to hospital discharges. DRGs group patients with similar clinical characteristics and resource utilization, which helps determine the appropriate level of reimbursement for each patient.
Description: The UACDS is a standardized data set used to collect patient-level data on outpatient services, including clinic visits, emergency department visits, and ambulatory surgery.
Where Used:
Purpose:
Feature | UHDDS | UACDS |
---|---|---|
Setting | Inpatient | Outpatient |
Data Elements | More comprehensive, including diagnoses, procedures, complications, and length of stay. | Less comprehensive, focusing on diagnosis, procedure, and visit characteristics. |
Purpose | Primarily for inpatient reimbursement and quality improvement. | Primarily for outpatient reimbursement and quality improvement. |
UHDDS:
UACDS:
By understanding the nuances of these two data sets, healthcare providers can ensure accurate data collection, reporting, and analysis, which ultimately contributes to improved patient care and healthcare system efficiency.
