Annotated Bibliography: Food and Culture

Avila, Allena. “You Are What You Eat: Food’s Influence on Culture and Identity”. The Wire.
In this article, Allena Avila presents her experiences away from the comfort of her own culture and identity, framed around the food availability in the city where she is attending college. In the lack of outlets for the detestation of the cuisine that she has grown associating with her sense of personal and cultural identity, she comes to find the emergence of cultural and identity gap within her. Avila argues that the role that food plays in everyday lives – serving as more than just fuel – is inherently tied to these two aspects, making its consumption, creation, and sharing important for individuals. The paper is rather useful in presenting the personal experience that an individual has had with the lack of access to their cultural foods. It can be a useful addition for a paper, because it provides support to the notion that food and culture are so inherently tied that its absence can be significantly impact on individuals. However, the credibility of the author is not as strong. Not only was the paper published in a non-scholarly medium, it does not provide any references for some of the claims made around the role that culture plays in food. Her expertise on the matter is directly related to her personal experiences with her local foods and the impact it has had on her, which can be limited.

Chung, Kevin. “Fried Rice: My Taste of Culture, Home and Family. In Situ, 2(4):28—31. 2010.
In this article, Kevin Chung makes a case for his preference for his father’s Chinese fried race, framed around the cultural importance that the food has for his family and himself. Chung claims that, beyond the personal appreciation of the food that he has developed, there is a significant cultural importance that the Chinese people place on rice itself. He recounts some of this significance throughout the essay, connecting it to the lived experiences that marked his life as an individual of this heritage. Chung makes a compelling case for the relationship between food and culture, tying it to the historical and material conditions that led to their preference in the region, the associations with family and familiarity, and the relationship between food and emotions. The article is very useful for my essay, because it provides a great reasoning for the extended purpose and meaning of food, beyond merely sustenance. It is also helpful that the paper was published in an academic journal with more rigor than an online publication. At the same time, the author also provides citation for his claims, combining them with the direct lived experiences that have marked his life as a Chinese American citizen.
