The book “Devil In The City” was written by American journalist Erik Larson and first published in 2003. The book is a reflection of the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago an event that was designed to celebrate the landing of Columbus in America after the stories of two very different history-making men Daniel Hudson Burnham, the architect of the fair, and H. H. Holmes, the notorious serial killer. The book explores thematic serious thematic concerns such as the contrast between sanity and insanity; the anonymity that a large modern city affords; the gender roles of men and women at the time; and the difference between Burnham’s large circle of collaborators and Holmes’ isolation. Some of which are present to date. I will reflect robustly on what the book was all about in terms of form and content and even the relevance it has to the modern society.
