The Functions of Eulogies
According to Jamieson and Campbell, eulogies have three main functions:
- To acknowledge the death. The eulogist acknowledges the death of the person being eulogized and expresses their grief.
- To transform the relationship between the living and the dead. The eulogist transforms the relationship between the living and the dead from present to past tense. They also help the living to come to terms with the death of the person being eulogized.
- To console the mourners. The eulogist consoles the mourners by offering them comfort and support. They also help the mourners to remember the deceased person in a positive light.
