The purpose of a classroom is to provide an environment conducive to learning, but not all classrooms are created equal. As an educator, I have spent much time reflecting on the readings from this semester and exploring my beliefs about leading a classroom in order to ensure the best results for my students. After much consideration, I firmly believe that running a student-centered classroom empowers students and provides them with the structure they crave while also encouraging creativity and collaboration. Much like building a house, creating an effective classroom takes planning and effort; it must be carefully constructed with every detail accounted for in order to create the desired outcome.
A student-centered approach to teaching allows students more freedom when it comes to how they learn (Lambert 2013). Instead of simply providing information through lectures or textbooks, teachers equipped with this model focus on nurturing students’ individual needs by tailoring instruction based on their strengths and interests (Hoppey 2020). When given more autonomy within their learning environment, it has been shown that students become more engaged in class activities which can lead to better results academically (Vogt et al., 2017). Additionally, allowing students more control over their own learning can help foster important skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, self-assessment and communication (Friedlaender et al., 2016).
Furthermore, creating an environment where collaboration between members of the group is encouraged helps promote socialization amongst students (Smith 2011). Encouraging dialogue between classmates can help build relationships between peers as well as cultivate respect for one another’s ideas. Additionally structuring lessons around team work gives everyone involved a sense of ownership over their success which can then drive motivation amongst classmates during future projects (Gillies 2018).
In conclusion , running a student-centered classroom promotes creativity , collaboration , accountability , among other beneficial qualities . Such methods allow each member of the class ample opportunity participate in their own education something key fostering growth any area life . By implementing these techniques educators will be able harness potential all learners available them tools reach success both now future endeavors.
