When given more autonomy within their learning environment, it has been shown that students become more engaged in class activities which can lead to better results academically (Vogt et al., 2017). Additionally, allowing students more control over their own learning can help foster important skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, self-assessment and communication (Friedlaender et al., 2016).

Furthermore, creating an environment where collaboration between members of the group is encouraged helps promote socialization amongst students (Smith 2011). Encouraging dialogue between classmates can help build relationships between peers as well as cultivate respect for one another’s ideas. Additionally structuring lessons around team work gives everyone involved a sense of ownership over their success which can then drive motivation amongst classmates during future projects (Gillies 2018).
