Considering the ethical ramifications of decisions, while also considering all other factors, requires practice. In order for you to practice this skill, you will be taking a look at the case study at the end of Chapter 5 in your textbook. After reading the case study, write a journal assignment in which you answer questions from the textbook.
Specifically, address the following critical elements:
I. Ethics
a. In your opinion, has Camper’s behavior jeopardized her case or the reputation of the Icuza Juvenile Probation Office? Why or why not?
b. Have Camper’s actions been ethical? Defend your answer.
c. If you believe that Camper was unethical, identify the point at which she crossed the line. How might this type of behavior impact the delivery of services to both the current client and his mother, as well as to Camper’s other clients?
d. Why are ethics so important in criminal justice? How should managers ensure that employees understand and exhibit ethical behaviors?
In my opinion, Camper’s behavior has jeopardized both her case and the reputation of the Icuza Juvenile Probation Office. Her actions demonstrate a lack of professionalism and potentially compromise the trust between the probation office, the client (Omar), and his mother. This could make it difficult to build a positive rapport with Omar and encourage him to comply with his probation requirements. Additionally, if the mother loses faith in the system due to Camper’s actions, it could hinder Omar’s chances of successful rehabilitation.
Camper’s actions were unethical. Her primary responsibility is to Omar’s well-being and ensuring he adheres to his probation terms. By covering for him and lying to his mother, she undermines the authority of the probation office and sends a mixed message to Omar regarding accountability.
The critical ethical lapse occurred when Camper lied to Omar’s mother about his whereabouts. This action prioritized personal convenience over her professional obligations. This behavior can have a cascading effect:
Ethics are paramount in criminal justice because they ensure fairness, trust, and the effectiveness of the system. Probation officers have a significant impact on the lives of those they supervise. Ethical conduct builds trust, fosters positive change, and promotes public safety.
Managerial Responsibility for Ethical Behavior:
Managers play a crucial role in ensuring ethical conduct by:
By prioritizing ethical conduct, criminal justice organizations can promote trust, fairness, and ultimately, a safer and more just society.
