Instructional Objective: Students will analyze the terms “Hysteria” and “Mass Hysteria,” in order to research a
historical case of widespread hysteria, uncovering its origin and impact.
AIM: Are we driven by specific impulses? If so, what are they?
TASK
STEP I: Carefully read the definitions of “hysteria” and “mass hysteria,” by clicking on the MATERIALS posted
in “The Crucible Unit.”
STEP II: Then click on “LIST OF MASS HYTERIA IN HISTORY” also located in “The Crucible” unit in Google
Classroom. Familiarize yourself with the cases of “mass hysteria” recorded.
STEP III: Choose one example of “mass hysteria” from THE LIST OF MASS HYSTERIA IN HISTORY” OR
YOU MAY CHOOSE TO FOCUS ON AND THEREFORE CONDUCT RESEARCH ON ANOTHER CASE NOT
REFERENCED ON THE LIST. Examples of mass hysteria can also be seen in politics, such as “The Red
Scare” McCarthyism, “STOP THE STEAL.”
STEP IV: Create an outline in preparation for the composing of a detailed analysis of the underlying variables
contributing to the case of “mass hysteria” you selected. What were the underlying variables setting the stage
for the emergence of mass hysteria? In other words, what were the circumstances leading to the episode of
“mass hysteria?” Who was involved? Who was directly impacted? Where did the occurrence take place? In
hindsight, meaning after the occurrence, what was discovered as the true motives igniting the hysteria? What, if
any, lessons were learned? Could such an occurrence happen in modern society? Explain in detail why or why

RESPOND: Think about the definitions of hysteria and mass hysteria. How can mass hysteria take hold of an
entire community? What has be already wrong with that society for such a thing to occur? In other words, what
would set the stage for mass hysteria in the United States? Simply put, mass hysteria just doesn’t happen.
Something has to ignite it. What would cause mass hysteria to engulf an entire community?
