Derek Walcott’s poem, “The Spoils Return,” is a reflection on how colonialism has shaped the Caribbean islands and its people. Through this poem, Walcott paints an image of a former colonial master returned to the land he once exploited for riches and material gain. He begins by describing how “the ghost of Eden was in his face”, suggesting that the figure had forgotten or neglected his own humanity by succumbing to greed (Walcott).

The tone then shifts as Walcott reveals that despite the figure once plundering these lands, they still have some form of connection—or nostalgia at least—to them as seen when he states “his heart broke like an eggshell/ As if through it there came out dew” (Walcott). This reflects on how although their actions were motivated by selfishness, they still maintain some level of attachment to this place which could be attributed to lingering guilt regarding their past misdeeds.

Ultimately though, Walcott suggests that all may not be lost for this person because despite having done wrong by these lands; he does recognize and lament his mistakes. This is seen when he talks about how “their grief was greater than his shame” implying that perhaps one day redemption may come from realizing what wrongs were committed and seeking reparations through repentance or other means (Walcott). Therefore overall The Spoilers Return serves as a reminder of our responsibility towards those we have hurt while also offering hope that through self-reflection change can take place even after much damage has been done.
