Derek Walcott’s poem, "The Spoils Return," is a reflection on how colonialism has shaped the Caribbean islands and its people. Through this poem, Walcott paints an image of a former colonial master returned to the land he once exploited for riches and material gain. He begins by describing how “the ghost of Eden was in his face”, suggesting that the figure had forgotten or neglected his own humanity by succumbing to greed (Walcott).
