DEVELOPING A PICOT Question Nursing
According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the Masters prepared nurse "recognizes that the master’s-prepared nurse applies research outcomes within the practice setting, resolves practice problems, works as a change agent, and disseminates results." Many research ideas emerge from practice and/or the educational environment. Formulating a well-built research question is challenging. Asking the right question facilitates the search process when conducting a review of the literature.

After reading the article, create your own PICOT question around the topic you selected that will be used for your Unit 2 Introduction to an Evidence-Based Practice Problem. In your discussion post, complete the following:
Describe your selected topic (HEALTHCARE EQUITY) and its significance
Sample Solution
Population: Children under the age of 5 living in low-income communities Intervention: A community-based intervention to improve access to healthy food and physical activity Comparison: Usual care Outcome: Body mass index (BMI) Timeframe: 12 months
This PICOT question is specific, answerable, relevant, and feasible. It is specific because it focuses on a specific population, intervention, comparison, outcome, and timeframe. It is answerable because there is research evidence on the effectiveness of community-based interventions to improve access to healthy food and physical activity. It is relevant because it is focused on an important public health issue, namely, the high rates of obesity and overweight in children living in low-income communities. It is feasible because it is possible to measure BMI in children and to implement a community-based intervention.
Here is a brief description of the topic of healthcare equity and its significance:
Healthcare equity is the fair and just distribution of health care resources and opportunities, regardless of social, economic, or demographic factors. It is important because it ensures that everyone has the opportunity to achieve their full health potential.
There are many factors that contribute to health inequities, including:
- Poverty
- Lack of access to quality health care
- Discrimination
- Social and environmental factors, such as poor housing and lack of safe places to exercise
- Expanding access to quality health care
- Reducing poverty and inequality
- Addressing discrimination
- Improving social and environmental conditions
- What are the most effective strategies to improve access to quality health care for people living in low-income communities?
- How can we reduce discrimination in the health care system?
- What are the long-term health consequences of health inequities?
- How can we measure the impact of healthcare equity interventions?
