   • Expression: Shanghai’s rapid economic and social development has led to a more modern and cosmopolitan outlook on gender. This is reflected in the increasing number of women pursuing higher education and entering the workforce, the growing acceptance of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations, and a shift towards more egalitarian relationships within families.
   • Explanation: The influx of global influences, the rise of feminism, and the changing economic landscape have contributed to a more progressive understanding of gender roles in Shanghai. However, traditional values continue to coexist with these modern trends, creating a complex and evolving social landscape.

Why they are different:

These two expressions of gender in Shanghai represent contrasting perspectives shaped by historical, social, and cultural factors. Traditional Confucian values emphasize hierarchical social structures and distinct gender roles, while modern cosmopolitanism promotes greater gender equality and individual autonomy.
