When it did not have a focus on economic growth, China’s health achievements surpassed India. Since the economic reforms 30 years ago, health progress in China has not been growing as much. Today, India is booming and is home to some of the richest people in the world, but it is also home to more food insecurities than anywhere else in the world.

The world`s two most populous countries, China and India, are undergoing dramatic demographic, societal, and economic transformations. However, the health status of residents of China and India still lags behind relative to other populations, and the health gains in each country have been uneven across sub-populations. Although the two nations` health systems have a great deal in common, they also display fundamental differences. A comparison can illuminate the challenges that are common to both and also underscore the unique challenges each faces. The comparison focuses on three different dimensions of the health care systems in China and India. First, it is the policy levers of the health system of each country the policy levers of the health system are structural parameters that directs or indirectly affect health and health care. Next, it is the analysis of intermediate outcomes, which include access to health care, levels of efficiency and waste in the system, and the quality of care.
