Disseminating Research
Researchers disseminate their findings formally through a variety of methods. The most common include professional papers, conference sessions, publication in professional, peer-reviewed journals, and dissertations. Researchers can also disseminate their findings informally by networking with colleagues. Both formal and informal methods can create opportunities for practice improvement and social change.
In this final Discussion, you share your research informally by identifying a key idea or piece of information from your research proposal. You also connect your study to social work practice, and identify any limitations that might exist.
Sample Solution
My research study seeks to examine the ways in which cultural backgrounds impact the mental health of African American adolescents. The key idea I have identified is that there are many factors that can influence an adolescent’s mental health, including their family history, socio-economic status, and access to resources. Furthermore, I believe that as social workers we must be aware of how these factors interact and shape our clients’ mental health so we can provide appropriate interventions tailored to each individual’s unique needs.
The results from my research have the potential to create meaningful practice improvement by providing insight into best practices for treating African American adolescents with mental health issues. Social workers may be able to use this information in order to more effectively serve their clients by understanding the complex interplay between culture and mental health outcomes among African American youth. Additionally, my findings could lead to broader social change such as increased funding for culturally sensitive services or improved educational opportunities for all students regardless of race or ethnicity (Bogar & Corzine, 2019).
Despite its potential benefits, there are some limitations associated with my research project. For example, due to financial constraints I am only able to survey a small sample size which may affect the generalizability of my findings. Additionally, since much of my data will come from self-reported surveys it is possible that some participants may not answer questions honestly or accurately due to fears regarding stigma or lack of trust in researchers (McCloskey et al., 2017). However, I plan on addressing these limitations through careful analysis and interpretation of data as well as incorporating feedback from participants during focus groups when possible.
