Feminist Therapy and Narrative Therapy are two popular approaches to counseling that have been used for many years to help individuals gain a greater understanding of themselves as well as their relationships with others. Although both therapies share some common elements such as being non-hierarchical, they also differ in several aspects regarding how they view the therapeutic relationship between counselor and patient.

One major difference between Feminist Therapy and Narrative Therapy is their respective perspectives when it comes to power dynamics. Feminist therapy focuses heavily on issues of gender equality, power imbalances, and oppression (Corey & Corey). This means that the therapist will strive for an egalitarian exchange where both parties are seen as equals – allowing clients to take full responsibility for their own problems without feeling like they are being judged or criticized (Corey & Corey). On the other hand, Narrative Therapy places more emphasis on creating a collaborative environment where stories can be shared among different people; this encourages the therapist to actively listen while offering insight into what is being discussed rather than attempting to control the conversation (White & Epston).

In terms of treatment goals both approaches seek similar outcomes however their methods tend to vary. Feminist therapy utilizes techniques which include self-reflection, group discussion around topics related to sexism or social injustices, as well as developing a sense of empowerment through positive action steps taken by clients themselves(Corey & Corey). On the other hand narrative therapy centers its approach around identifying patterns in behavior or language use which allows individuals uncover themselves “unstuck” from problematic storylines (White & Epston). All in all, although there are several similarities between feminist therapy and narrative therapy each offers unique perspectives when it comes dealing with complex psychological topics such personal identity formation or relational struggles.
