Financial ratios are essential to provide an accurate valuation of a firm. Select a publicly traded firm of your choice. Select one ratio each in the areas of (a) performance, (b) activity, (c) financing, and (d) liquidity warnings. Provide an evaluation of the selected firm’s strengths and weaknesses. Based on the ratios you selected, how well does your chosen firm perform? Explain.
The performance ratio chosen for this evaluation was Return on Equity (ROE). ROE measures how well a company can use investments from shareholders to generate profits. MSFT’s ROE for 2020 was 42%, which is considered high compared to its 5-year average of 29%. This indicates that Microsoft is using shareholder money efficiently in order to generate profits. This provides evidence of strong financial performance by the company.
The activity ratio chosen was Inventory Turnover Ratio (ITR). ITR measures the rate at which inventory is sold over a period of time. For 2020, Microsoft’s ITR came in at 13 times per year which means it took approximately one month for them to sell their inventory or goods they produce. This ratio has remained consistent with a 5-year average of 11 times per year indicating strong management when it comes to stocking supplies and managing production levels accordingly.
For financing ratios selected was Debt/Equity Ratio (D/E). D/E tells us how much debt a company holds relative to equity or shareholder funds used for business operations and growth prospects. In 2020 MSFT had a relatively low D/E ratio of 0:30 meaning there are more equity funds than debt being used for operations and investments; thus suggesting good overall financial health since any increase in debt can cause more interest expense reducing net profit margins .
The liquidity warning measure selected was Current Ratio (CR). CR shows us whether an organization can pay its short term debts using current assets such as cash on hand or accounts receivables in relation to current liabilities like bills owed within that same period . Microsoft posted an impressive CR of 4:1 meaning they have enough available liquid assets should any short term liabilities arise; further evidencing their capacity to manage finances responsibly across all business cycles .
Overall , based on these four analysis ratios above , it appears that Microsoft Corporation exhibits strong foundational financial metrics indicative of both solid long-term management practices but also ready access towards additional capital if needed in pursuit of future projects or initiatives .
As a computer science teacher, I need to have a secure understanding of numeracy myself and understand how important numeracy is. With this, I can become a more inclusive teacher. We rely on the mathematical concepts to help us solve complex problems in Computer Science. That said, ‘by giving an exciting, fun real-world context for the importance of numbers and mathematics in Computer Science topics can also be used to support numeracy’ (Teaching London Computing, n.d). This can be seen from the activities students are required to complete during my lessons. They closely relate to everyday life examples and how certain machines may work. For example a speed camera, calculator and working out grade boundaries which students can adapt and use to work out their own assessment grades. This mirrors what the National Curriculum says about sing mathematical reasoing and numeracy in all subjects so students understand the importance of it. (DfE, p103, 2013) (APPENDIX)
Alongside numeracy is the importance of literacy. Michael Wilshaw (2012) stated that it should be everyone’s priority in all schools to improve literacy standards, supported by OFSTED’s report ‘Improving literacy in secondary schools’ (2013). The report highlights that literacy is a key issue no matter what subject is being taught (OFSTED, 2013, p.8). In Computer Science, if students are not fluent in reading and writing, these difficulties will have a huge effect on students’ ability to evaluate and review their programs and these would not be conducted efficiently. Students also need to be able to communicate effectively when problem solving, in order to explain their thought process in solving a set task, or to gain further assistance. If they cannot communicate, support or explanations could be interpreted incorrectly.
The National Literacy Trust (2014) defines literacy as, ‘the ability to read,
