Introduction to Forensic Science — Term Paper and Presentation Each student is required to write a case study term paper on a specific forensic science topic discussed in the course, and present this to the class during the virtual class meeting. The case will presumably include other forensic specialty topics, but your focus should be on the area you choose. You should address the recognition, collection, packaging, and testing of the evidence, and what this meant for the case or how this impacted the case findings. For example, if your forensic specialty is toxicology, and you choose to research the Jonestown Massacre, in additional the basic case facts, you would need to specifically address the type of poison used, what effects it had on the body, and what forensic testing was used and the methodology behind the testing.
Term Paper Content: The following information should be addressed In the paper: 1. Describe, in detail, the case. 2. List all forensic evidence, especially that of your chosen forensic specialty. 3. Discuss how the forensic evidence — and especially your chosen forensic specialty — impacted the case findings, especially if it was significant in identifying a suspect, victim, crime scene, motive, or cause or manner of death. 4. If known, discuss how this case influenced other cases or this forensic specialty, such as new accepted testing methods or court decisions. 5. List three (3) new facts that you learned from your research. 6. Paper written in APA style, double spaced, one-inch margins, and Word format. Must be at least four (4) pages PLUS a resources list. Papers will be graded on content, grammar, and organization. Your paper should have at least five (5) references from reputable sources, such as scholarly journals, published research papers, government (.gov) or educational facilities (.edu) websites, policy or procedure documents from a criminal justice agency, major news organization, personal Interview with subject matter experts, etc. The reference CANNOT be a blog, entertainment or social media source, inflammatory or otherwise derogatory site, or other compromised sources.
