Asian Americans are Americans of Asian ancestry, including naturalized Americans who are immigrants from Asia and descendants of such immigrants. The demographics of Asian Americans describe a heterogeneous group of people in the United States who can trace their ancestry to one or more countries in East, South or Southeast Asia. Asian Americans have historically been upheld as a “model minority,” experiencing few health problems relative to other minority groups. Research within the past 20 years, however, has shown that Asian Americans are at high risk for Hepatitis B, liver cancer, tuberculosis, and lung cancer, among other conditions (Chen MS, Hawks BL, 1995). Asian Americans face health disparities in cancer, chronic diseases, such as heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes, mental health, and among the elderly. It is the only U.S. population suffering cancer as the leading cause of death.
