Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in Elderly Smokers of Miami, Florida: A Preventable Crisis

Introduction:

Miami, Florida, boasts a vibrant senior population, but within this group lies a hidden vulnerability: a disproportionately high prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) among elderly residents with a history of smoking. According to the American Lung Association, Florida ranks 5th in the nation for COPD prevalence, with seniors representing the demographic most impacted. In Miami-Dade County specifically, 12.1% of adults aged 65 and older suffer from COPD, a concerning statistic that threatens their quality of life, independence, and even their lives.

This health promotion program, “Cues for Breath: Reclaiming Lung Health in Miami,” aims to address this prevalent issue by empowering this vulnerable population to manage their COPD, prevent exacerbations, and reclaim their lung health. By focusing on education, self-management skills, and community support, we aim to reduce COPD-related hospitalization rates in Miami by 10% within two years, a realistic and measurable outcome achievable through targeted interventions.

Miami’s elderly smokers form a complex and multifaceted vulnerable population. Several factors contribute to their increased risk of COPD:

• High smoking rates: A legacy of tobacco use persists in Miami, particularly among older generations. In 2019, 14.8% of Florida adults aged 65 and older reported current smoking, significantly higher than the national average of 8.1%.
• Socioeconomic disparities: Miami’s diverse population experiences uneven access to healthcare and preventive services. Low-income seniors, a significant portion of smokers, often lack resources for proper respiratory health management.
• Limited understanding of COPD: Misconceptions and stigma surrounding COPD remain prevalent, leading to delayed diagnosis, poor treatment adherence, and inadequate disease management.

These factors combine to create a perfect storm for COPD within Miami’s elderly smoking population. By prioritizing education, accessibility, and culturally sensitive interventions, “Cues for Breath” will empower these individuals to take control of their lung health and prevent the debilitating consequences of COPD.
