The concept of heterogeneity states that even though two items may appear to be the same, they can have distinct physical and chemical properties. This means that despite an abundance of a particular resource, it can still be considered scarce depending on its heterogeneity. For example, water is an abundant resource on Earth but certain types of high-quality drinking water are limited due to differences in their physical and chemical properties (Lanham & Saha, 2020). Furthermore, many people rely on specific sources of freshwater for their daily needs, so when these supplies become contaminated or disrupted by natural disasters such as floods or droughts, clean drinking water becomes scarce. In this case, although there may be plenty of water available overall, certain kinds are not accessible and therefore considered rare.
Another example is energy sources such as solar power. Solar energy is abundant throughout the world but harnessing it requires specialized technology and infrastructure which makes it costlier than other forms of energy production (Sayigh et al., 2018). Additionally, solar cells must be constructed from specific materials with unique specifications for efficient performance; hence any lack in availability or quality leads to an increase in price as well as scarcity (Engelmann et al., 2019).
In conclusion, according to the concept of heterogeneity even if a resource appears plentiful at first glance its scarcity can depend upon its unique characteristics that separate it from others like it. This can create variations between similar resources leading them from being perceived as plentiful—to being valued more highly because they are rarer than expected due to their distinctiveness.
