Nursing Theory: The Neuman Systems Model
The Neuman Systems Model (NSM) is a grand nursing theory that was developed by Betty Neuman in the 1970s. The NSM is a holistic model that views the person as a dynamic system that is constantly interacting with the environment. The model identifies four major variables that can affect the person's health:
- Internal variables: These are the person's physical, psychological, and sociocultural characteristics.
- External variables: These are the physical, social, and emotional forces in the environment.
- Neuman's lines of defense: These are the person's natural defenses against stressors.
- Neuman's lines of resistance: These are the person's adaptive mechanisms that help to maintain stability in the face of stressors.
- The person is a total system.
- The person is in constant interaction with the environment.
- The person has lines of defense and resistance.
- The person's response to stressors is predictable.
