Health indicators can be used, for example, to describe health care needs in a population, and the disease burden in specific population groups. The description of a population`s health needs can guide decisions about the extent and nature of unmet needs, the inputs needed to address the problem, and the groups that should receive the greatest attention, among other functions. Leading health indicators include: access to health services; clinical preventive services; environmental quality; maternal infant and child health; mental health; nutrition, physical activity, and obesity; and oral health. When patients have access to health care, they are empowered to build beneficial relationships with providers and ultimately manage and overcome illness and injury. Without that access, people live with undue pain and conditions that tend to worsen over time.
