The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and The World Bank are two international organizations that have had a significant influence on the development discourse regarding education. Both organizations have different approaches towards development through education but share the same goal of improving access to quality education for all individuals around the world.

UNESCO’s approach is mainly focused on providing access to basic education as well as encouraging promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all ages in order to create an educational environment that can benefit individuals from different socio-economic backgrounds (UNESCO, 2021). To do this, it has implemented various initiatives such as Education For All (EFA), which focuses on increasing enrolment rates of children in public schools by making them accessible and affordable; Quality Education (QE) which promotes improvement of teaching methods and curriculum; Teacher Empowerment Programs which focus on professionalizing teachers; Gender Equality Programs which aim to reduce gender disparities within classrooms. It also works with governments across the globe in order to promote implementation of these policies within their respective countries.

The World Bank takes a more economic approach towards development through education. It looks at investment into sectors such as health and infrastructure as ways in which access to quality education can be increased especially amongst poorer populations who may not have access due to financial constraints.(World Bank, 2020). Its main initiatives include The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) where funding is provided by donors such donor countries so that projects related to improvement of infrastructure or vocational training can be established; The Human Capital Project (HCP) whose objective is to improve capabilities amongst students regardless of their backgrounds so they can compete better with other students from wealthier families ;and its flagship initiative “ Learning For All ” ,which seeks to ensure every student has adequate knowledge necessary for successful participation in society .

In conclusion , both UNESCO and The World Bank take different yet complementary approaches when it comes to improving standards of living via improved access to quality education worldwide.
