Jazz As Americas Music
It's true that pinning down a single thing to represent oneself is tricky! We're all a blend of influences, experiences, and emotions. But trying to do so can be a fun exercise. Here's what I'd use to represent myself:
-
Music:
-
Classical: I'd go with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. His works are complex, intricate, and full of intellectual depth. They also have a timeless quality that resonates with me.
-
World Music: I'm fascinated by the diverse musical traditions of the world. I love the rhythmic complexity of Indian classical music, the soulful sounds of West African drumming, and the captivating melodies of Irish traditional music.
-
Modern Pop: I'm not above enjoying a catchy pop song! Someone like Florence + the Machine with their powerful vocals and imaginative lyrics hits a chord with me.
-
-
Art:
-
Impressionism: I find the Impressionists' use of light and color incredibly captivating. The works of Claude Monet are particularly inspiring to me.
-
Surrealism: The dreamlike, often bizarre, imagery of Surrealism appeals to my sense of the absurd and the uncanny. Salvador Dali is a favorite artist of mine.
-
Contemporary Art: I'm drawn to the experimental and conceptual nature of much contemporary art. I find the works of Marina Abramović to be particularly powerful.
-
-
Literature:
-
Classics: I have a soft spot for the great works of English literature. Jane Austen's wit and social commentary always delight me, while Charles Dickens's exploration of social inequality and human nature is deeply moving.
-
Fantasy: I love the imaginative worlds and epic storytelling of J.R.R. Tolkien and Ursula K. Le Guin.
-
Nonfiction: I'm a voracious reader of nonfiction, particularly biographies, memoirs, and works exploring social issues.
-
This is just a glimpse, of course. There are many other forms of art and expression that resonate with me. But ultimately, I think the best way to represent myself is through my actions, my interactions with others, and the unique blend of qualities that make me who I am.
