The lung microbiota, is the pulmonary microbial community consisting of a complex variety of microorganisms found in the lower respiratory tract particularly on the mucous layer and the epithelial surfaces. Cystic fibrosis infants have relatively sterile lower airways with a progressive shift to a microbiome dominated by aerobic and anaerobic bacterial species commonly associated with the oral cavity.
