In a world striving towards becoming more sustainable, insulation materials are an important consideration. Insulation materials are used to reduce energy consumption in buildings, and the right choice can help increase efficiency and make a building more comfortable by keeping the inside temperature stable (Laza-Stanca et al., 2017). With this in mind, there is increasing demand for eco-friendly insulation products from both industry professionals and consumers. This project will explore some of the most popular sustainable insulation materials available today.

One of the most commonly used forms of natural insulation is cellulose fiber. Cellulose fiber has high thermal performance and low embodied energy when compared with other commonly used insulations (Anderson et al., 2020). It also offers excellent sound absorption properties which can be beneficial in reducing noise pollution. To get optimal performance from cellulose fiber insulation it must be correctly applied using airtight layers that prevent air infiltration (Khandelwal & Bijwe, 2019).

Another increasingly popular type of natural insulation is sheep’s wool. Sheep’s wool is renewable, recyclable and biodegradable which makes it attractive as an environmentally friendly option (Banerjee et al., 2018). It also performs well in terms of fire retardancy due to its high silica content which gives it flame resistance up to temperatures of 600 degrees Celsius (Kumar & Karthikeyan, 2016). In addition to these advantages, sheep’s wool has naturally occurring oils that act as a natural insect repellent making it less vulnerable to infestation than other types of insulating material such as polystyrene or glass wool (Virkar & Khandelwal ,2020).

Finally, wood fibers are being looked at as a potential source for sustainable insulation applications due to their good thermal performance similar to many synthetic fibres such as polyurethane or polystyrene foams (Fischer et al.,2019 ). Wood fibers have relatively low embodied energy compared with alternatives like mineral wools or expanded polystyrene foam while still offering good fire resistance properties (Gibson & Huettenmoser 2021). The main challenge associated with wood fibers is application; they must be tightly packed into panels during installation in order for them to work effectively as an insulator otherwise air gaps may form causing poor performance.
