Media research – film market

Hollywood movies began to permeate the Chinese movie market in the 1990s. The Chinese government imposed a quota of 10 imported films each year, a number that has increased in the past decades. Since 1994, the government has allowed foreign films to show in Chinese cinemas as fenzhang pian, or on revenue sharing basis. These are films distributed almost exclusively by Hollywood`s Big Six studios (Walt Disney, Warner Bros, Paramount, Fox, Sony, and Universal). Films selected to show in China and share the local earnings in this model are commonly known as import quota films, because the government limits the number of foreign films that can come into the country in a given year. Per the original mandate governing the import quota, films selected would “basically reflect the finest global cultural achievements and represent the latest artistic and technological accomplishments in contemporary world cinema.”

Today, almost all content creation on the Internet is controlled by large companies who serve as the middleman between people and it’s content. If you are a content creator and want to make money from your website, posting videos, sharing music, writing blogs, or advertisements, you must go through companies such as Google, Facebook, Youtube, Apple, or Spotify first. While these companies provide the platform for your content, they also take a percentage of the profits your content generates through streams, likes, clicks and listens. Ultimately these companies have full control over how much you earn for the content, with the ability to censor and control whatever they want based on their rules and personal preferences.
