Mezirow’s transformative learning theory.

As adult learners, you will experience this course differently than courses you took before age 21. Your text helps you understand the differences among elementary, secondary, and adult education. Your text and additional readings help you understand the various theories and models of adult education. Additionally, Rainy and Kolb have their initial work to include applying Kolb’s theory to teaching and learning with diverse populations. This assignment will require you to be informed about four particular models of adult education:

Knowles’s theory of andragogy.
Mezirow’s transformative learning theory.
Rainey and Kolb’s experiential learning theory and learning styles in diversity education.
You will evaluate these models for alignment with your learning experiences. Finally, you will describe a combination model that would align with your teaching philosophy, a unique statement regarding your approach of sharing information with other adults from diverse populations.

Instructions
Create a PowerPoint presentation (minimum of 20 slides) that presents, in your own words, Knowles’s theory of andragogy, Mezirow’s transformative learning theory, and Rainey and Kolb’s experiential learning theory and learning styles in diversity education.

The initial part of your PowerPoint should demonstrate your understanding of these three theories of adult education. In the next slides, describe the alignment between your own learning approach and one or more of these theories. In the final slides, describe your teaching philosophy and how you intend to approach sharing your expertise and knowledge with other adults as a social work leader (professor and/or professional development specialist).

The eight main bullet points that follow correspond to the grading criteria for this assignment:

Explain Knowles’s theory of andragogy.
Explain Mezirow’s transformational learning theory.
Explain Rainey and Kolb’s experiential learning theory and learning styles in diversity education.
Explain how your personal learning approach aligns with one or more adult learning theories.
Describe your teaching philosophy and explain how it aligns with one or more adult learning theories.
How will you approach sharing your expertise and knowledge with other adults from diverse populations?
Explain how the NASW Code of Ethics and the NASW Standards for Technology guide your approach to teaching.

Adult Learning Theories: A Guide for Social Work Educators (20+ Slides)

Slide 1: Title Slide

  • Your Name & Affiliation
  • Course Name & Date

Slides 2-4: Introduction

  • Briefly introduce the concept of adult learning and its unique characteristics compared to traditional education approaches.
  • Highlight the importance of adult learning theories for social work educators.
  • Briefly introduce the three key adult learning theories covered in this presentation: Knowles’ Andragogy, Mezirow’s Transformative Learning, and Rainey & Kolb’s Experiential Learning.

Slides 5-8: Knowles’ Andragogy

  • Define Andragogy and its core assumptions about adult learners.
  • Discuss the six principles of Andragogy:
    • Need to Know: Adults are motivated by a need to know the application of new knowledge.
    • Self-Concept: Adults see themselves as capable and autonomous learners.
    • Experience: Adults bring a wealth of experience to the learning table.
    • Readiness to Learn: Adults are most receptive to learning that addresses their current needs.
    • Problem-Centered Orientation: Adults prefer problem-solving and application-oriented learning.
    • Collaboration: Adults learn well through collaboration and interaction with others.
  • Provide examples of how Andragogy principles can be applied in social work education (e.g., case studies, group discussions, self-reflection exercises).

Slides 9-12: Mezirow’s Transformative Learning Theory

  • Define Transformative Learning and its focus on transforming our perspectives and assumptions.
  • Explain Mezirow’s concept of “disorienting dilemma” – an experience that challenges our existing beliefs.
  • Discuss the 10 phases of Transformative Learning:
    1. A disorienting dilemma
    2. Self-examination with feelings of confusion or uncertainty
    3. Critical assessment of assumptions
    4. Recognition of a limiting perspective
    5. Exploration of alternative perspectives
    6. Concept invention (creating new meaning)
    7. Integration into life context (applying new understanding)
    8. The transformed meaning becomes a reference point
    9. Reevaluation of life decisions
    10. Reconnection with experience (seeing the world differently)
  • Provide examples of how Transformative Learning can occur in social work education (e.g., exposure to diverse lived experiences, critical reflection on biases).

Slides 13-16: Rainey & Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory & Diversity Education

  • Define Experiential Learning and the importance of experience in the learning process.
  • Explain Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle:
    • Concrete Experience (having a new experience)
    • Reflective Observation (reflecting on the experience)
    • Abstract Conceptualization (forming new ideas based on reflection)
    • Active Experimentation (applying new ideas in new situations)
  • Discuss Rainey’s adaptation of Kolb’s cycle for Diversity Education, emphasizing the role of self-reflection and critical thinking.
  • Provide examples of how Experiential Learning can be applied in social work education with a focus on diversity (e.g., simulations, role-playing, service-learning projects).

Slides 17-18: My Personal Learning Approach

  • Reflect on your own learning experiences as an adult learner.
  • Identify which adult learning theory (Andragogy, Transformative Learning, Experiential Learning) best aligns with your learning style and provide specific examples. (e.g., I learn best through collaboration and applying knowledge to real-world scenarios, aligning with Andragogy principles).

Slides 19-20: Teaching Philosophy

  • State your teaching philosophy for adult learners in social work education.
  • Explain how this philosophy incorporates the principles from the adult learning theories discussed. (e.g., My teaching philosophy emphasizes creating a learner-centered environment that fosters collaboration, critical reflection, and real-world application of knowledge, aligning with Andragogy and Experiential Learning).

Slides 21-22: Sharing Expertise with Diverse Learners

  • Discuss strategies for effectively sharing knowledge and expertise with adult learners from diverse populations.
  • Highlight the importance of cultural sensitivity, inclusivity, and creating a safe space for open dialogue.
  • Briefly mention how Andragogy principles (e.g., valuing experience, collaboration) can be used to promote inclusivity.
