The history of the police in the United States can be separated into four eras: the political era, the reform era, the community problem-solving era, and the Homeland Security era. The police began as the night watch in colonial America and evolved to become paramilitary and professional. The political era of policing (1840-1930) was characterized by close ties between police and politicians with an emphasis on appeasing politicians. There was no civil service system, so the police were hired, fired and managed at the discretion of the local politicians. The police had limited access to technology during this time.
