The “will to power” is a central concept in the philosophy of 19^th century Germany philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It is best understood as an irrational force, found in all individuals, that can be channeled towards different ends. Nietzsche was the great radical who stripped away ancient values down to the bone and left mankind naked and exposed, and the hope offered by the thought that each man is the arbiter of his own destiny is what fueled much of the optimism of the 20^th century. Nietzsche is as important now in the service of good as he was in the beginning of the 20^th century although he could not stem the tide of German nationalism and anti-Semitism.
