Watching NITV’s nightly news programs and documentaries was an eye-opening experience. Not only did I get a greater insight into the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, but I also found myself reflecting on my own personal feelings towards the topics discussed.
The current affairs program looked at issues such as social justice, racism, education and healthcare affecting Indigenous communities across Australia. The documentary focused on stories of resilience in the face of adversity and explored how these stories can inspire others to take action. Hearing from people directly affected by these issues enabled me to gain a better understanding of their struggles and successes. Witnessing first-hand accounts humanized the stories and made them all the more real for me.
I found it interesting how both programs used different narrative structures to discuss similar themes; one using interviews with experts who provided facts about each issue while the other centered around individual experiences which allowed viewers to connect emotionally with those featured in the documentary. This contrast highlighted two sides of each issue -the reality of what is happening versus what could be done to improve it- that were equally important for conveying information effectively (Lawrence & Jewson, 2000). Moreover, both programs contributed significantly towards developing an overall picture of Indigenous life in Australia today.
Overall, this viewing experience has broadened my knowledge base not only about Indigenous matters but also about media production as a tool for raising awareness around key topics that are too often sidelined or ignored due its lack of mainstream coverage. It has definitely been a valuable learning journey.
