Discuss the nurses role in medication administration and how they contribute to, or work to eliminate, medication errors
Nurses role in medication administration
Nurses are primarily involved in the administration of medications across settings. Nurses can also be involved in both the dispensing and preparation of medications, such as crushing pills and drawing up a measured amount of injections. Nurses spend much of their time administering medications. Accurate and safe medication administration depends on nurses` pharmacologic knowledge, decision making, and critical thinking skills. Medication errors may occur during any phase of the medication process, such as prescribing and transcribing. To safeguard against medication errors, nurses must implement the proper procedures for medication administration, including at least these five rights: right patient, drug dose, route, and time. In addition, they must complete accurate documentation once the patient receives the medication.
