Your Practicum experience includes working in a clinical setting that will help you gain the knowledge and skills needed as an advanced practice nurse. In your practicum experience, you will develop a practicum plan that sets forth objectives to frame and guide your practicum experience.

As part of your Practicum Experience Plan, you will not only plan for your learning in your practicum experience but also work through various patient visits with focused notes as well as one (1) journal entry.

As you develop your individualized practicum learning objective, be sure to write them using the SMART format. Use the resources found in Week 2 to guide your development. Once you review your resources, continue and complete the following. Note: Please make sure each of your objectives are connected to your self-assessment. Also, consider that you will need to demonstrate how you are advancing your knowledge in the clinical specialty.

  • Specific: The objective should be specific and clearly defined. For example, instead of saying “I want to learn more about the nursing process,” you could say “I will be able to identify the five steps of the nursing process and apply them to a patient case study.”
  • Measurable: The objective should be measurable so that you can track your progress and determine whether you have met your goal. For example, instead of saying “I want to become a better nurse,” you could say “I will increase my knowledge of the nursing process by 10% by the end of my practicum.”
  • Attainable: The objective should be attainable and realistic given your current skills and knowledge level. For example, if you are a new nurse, it would not be realistic to set an objective of becoming a certified nurse practitioner within the next six months.
  • Relevant: The objective should be relevant to your practicum experience and your career goals. For example, if you are interested in working in a pediatric setting, it would be relevant to set an objective of learning how to assess and care for children.
  • Time-bound: The objective should have a specific timeframe for completion. For example, you could say “I will complete a literature review on the use of non-pharmacological interventions for pain management by the end of my practicum.”

  • Be specific and avoid using vague language.
  • Use action verbs to describe what you will do.
  • Be realistic and set achievable goals.
  • Break down large goals into smaller, more manageable steps.
  • Get feedback from your practicum supervisor or instructor to ensure that your objectives are relevant and attainable.
