Non-human primates are used in medical research because of their similarities to human beings. Results from research on non-human primates can often be applied to human, and scientists have learned much about diseases, disorders, prevention, and treatments for both humans and animals. Limitations of genetic research with non-human primates include cost and availability. However, the ability to manipulate both generic and environmental factors in captive primate populations indicates the promise of genetic research with these important animal models for illuminating complex disease processes. The directive permits the use of non-human primates if no alternative methods are available.
