What are the similarities and differences between qualitative and quantitative research? Provide an example of a situation in which you would use a qualitative approach, a quantitative approach, and a combination of both approaches (a mixed methods study). What are some of the types of descriptive statistics which might be used in a quantitative study?
Quantitative research is “explaining phenomena by collecting numerical data that are analyzed using mathematically based methods (in particular statistics).” Qualitative research seeks to answer questions about why and how people behave in the way that they do. It provides in-depth information about human behavior. The difference between the two is that whereas qualitative research identifies abstract concepts, quantitative research collects numerical data, and the substantial difference is in the type of action applied and in the size of the sample.
