distress outside the intensive care unit presents unique challenges. Situations may require a variety of
techniques and treatments, such as nasal tracheal suctioning, chest PT, administration of aerosolized
medication, etc. all of which the therapist may need to perform. In many instances non-ICU nurses are not
trained in these techniques. Often it is a therapist that stands between the patient and the intensive care unit.
