The World Bank NGO is an international organization working to reduce poverty and improve living standards in developing countries. It operates in over 100 countries, including many with significant unmet health needs such as West Africa, India, Ethiopia and Bangladesh. The organization provides a wide range of assistance including access to healthcare services, nutrition support programs and building infrastructure like water systems.
One area where the World Bank has had considerable success is in expanding access to healthcare services. A study conducted by Georgetown University found that between 2000 and 2017 the percentage of people with access to basic healthcare increased from 63% to 82% due largely to the efforts of the World Bank (Mills et al., 2019). This increase was driven primarily by their funding for essential drugs, improved medical care training for local health workers and capacity building initiatives in low-income communities (World Bank Group, 2019).
Local government organizations also play an important role in providing necessary health services to underserved populations. For example, in Nigeria 70 percent of citizens rely on their local government facilities for primary care while only 15 percent utilize private sector providers (Steinberg et al., 2017).
