Slavery vs. Indentured Servitude The concept of slavery was hardly a new one to the English colonists who first came to America. It had been practiced in Europe for more than 100 years. In 1619, colonists brought enslaved Africans to Virginia. This was the beginning of a human trafficking between Africa and North America based on the social norms of Europe. Throughout the 17^th and 18^th centuries people were kidnapped from the continent of Africa, forced into slavery in the American colonies and exploited to work as indentured servants and labor in the production of crops such as tobacco and cotton. Both slaves and indentured servants were subject to oppression and harsh treatment, but indentured servants were people in temporary service who would afterwards regain their freedom, while slaves were considered property for the duration of their lives and were rarely ever granted freedom.
