Statistical Process Control in Healthcare

Statistical process control (SPC) is a method of quality control which employs statistical methods to monitor and control a process. This helps to ensure that the process operates efficiently, producing more specification-conforming products with less waste. SPC was spawned at Bell Laboratories in 1920 by Walter A. Shewhart, the father of SPC, if you will. Well versed in the statistical theories of his day, Walter was able to detect differences in the sources of variation of a process. He noted that some of these sources were “natural” to the process, others were not. SPC can monitor the “health” of patient care using two key clinical indicators: the patient`s length of stay (LOS) and errors such as infection rates.
