I select for my research paper the story “sweat”, focusing on domestic abuse and passive resistance.
This story explores the numerous ways that domestic violence can seem. Abuse can take the form of emotional manipulation and degradation; it is not just physical violence. Hurston utilizes Delia to show a sense of feminine power and righteousness, even though she is a victim of Sykes’s physical and emotional abuse. Hurston establishes a setting to examine the use of feminine power through quiet resistance when Sykes is ironically killed because of his violent behavior. In this case  Does justice get done? Does Hurston imply that there is a “higher law” that resolves issues that socially created laws are unable to?
