The case between William Henry Furman and Georgia occurred in 1972. Before 1972, Georgia and other states that provided for capital punishment used employed the structures that gave juris a broad discretion in providing for a decision regarding the imposition of death penalty on a person convicted of crimes tantamount to death. In this case, the US Supreme Court struck down this argument in sentencing and thus invalidated the death penalty as it was then in the entire United States.
