You will evaluate two main components:
1. Does the film accurately depict the short story?
2. Do the film and the short story accurately portray Alzheimer's?
3. Provide evidence from both the film and the story.
Sample Solution
The short story “The Bear Came Over the Mountain” by Alice Munro (2013) and the film Away from Her (Egoyan et al., 2006) both follow a couple dealing with difficulties as they age. The narrative of both is predominantly focused on Fiona, an elderly woman diagnosed with dementia who decides to leave her husband Grant in order to have better care at a nursing home. However, upon comparing these two works it is evident that while the basic plot points remain consistent between them there are some key differences; namely in terms of characterization and tone. In particular, Away from Her provides more detail into Fiona’s past experiences which helps give greater insight into why she makes certain decisions throughout her journey than what can be gleaned from reading Munro’s story alone. Overall, this comparison shows how adapting literature for screen can help demonstrate its full impact even when moments cannot be fully conveyed using words alone.
The Human Rights path is about ensuring people know and declare their rights. Everyone must be aware that a person is held responsible for ensuring the rights of an individual are provided and met. A Human Rights approach states that not only people who use the service should have their rights in place and provided with but the other individuals around e.g. A family coming into a hotel, the family should know and be able to declare their rights however the staff in the hotel have also got their rights.
The panel principles are the critical principles which are required in the operation of the Human Rights approach:
- Participation – Everyone is able to cooperate in any changes that could influence their Human Rights.
- Accountability – To ensure successful observation and to also ensure that breaking or failing to observe a law agreement will lead to being solved.
- Non- discrimination and equality – All forms of discrimination should be abolished.
- Empowerment – Everyone should be aware of their rights.
- Legality – Everyone should be aware that rights are legally kept in force.
