The documentary Tulia
Tulia, Texas, a film by Cassandra Herrman and Kelly Whalen, follows the 1999 raid and its aftermath, which roiled the small rural community. Through its scrupulous investigation of a landmark case, Tulia, Texas uncovers the deep-rooted assumptions about race and crime that still permeate our society and undermine our justice system. The film convincingly shows how the “war on drugs” has become a war on due process, waged against African Americans. The officer responsible for the racially motivated arrests is Tom Coleman, a Texas cop with a checkered past and a self-declared fondness for racial epithets.
