The readings for this week have provided a comprehensive analysis of the ways in which race and gender are constructed within sporting contexts. Through a variety of theoretical perspectives, we can gain an understanding of how these identities shape individuals’ experiences as well as how they may be reproduced or challenged. A primary theme that emerges from these readings is the idea that while sports offer opportunities to transcend traditional boundaries based on race and gender, they remain fundamentally shaped by these social constructions (Coakley et al., 2018).

The articles by Edelman, Coakley and Wallace demonstrate the ways in which power dynamics continue to define athlete’s lives both on and off the field. For instance, Edelman highlights how women in sport are often objectified and represented through narrow stereotypes while Coakley argues that racialized individuals often face discrimination when trying to access sports resources such as coaching or facilities (Edelman, 1989; Coakley et al., 2018). Additionally, Wallace argues that there continues to be unequal representation of athletes from marginalized backgrounds in higher echelons of sport (Wallace & Epstein-Ngo 2011). These various arguments serve to demonstrate just how entrenched race and gender inequalities remain within contemporary sporting contexts.

In conclusion, this week’s readings have highlighted the pervasiveness of racialized and gendered discourses within sport culture. While some progress has been made in recent years towards greater inclusion and equity within elite level sports, much work still needs to be done if we are ever going accomplish meaningful social change. Going forward it will be important for us continue critically examining existing systems so as identify effective strategies for challenging oppressive practices around race and gender that exist throughout all levels of athletic participation.
