Watch this trailer: The Mask you Live IN
The films notes that, Pressured by the media, their peer group, and even the adults in their lives, our protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become “real” men. ”
Do you agree or disagree with the message of this film? Why or why not? Do you think that our culture paints a narrow and limiting version of what it means to be a boy/man today?
I agree with the message of this film because it encourages people to break free from gender stereotypes and recognize their true identities. As a society, we are often taught that there is a certain way to “be a man” – one that is violent, disconnected from emotions, and objectifies women (Malson & Platow, 2016). These outdated gender roles can lead younger generations to believe they must conform in order to fit in or be accepted by their peers. However, The Mask You Live In calls for its viewers to stop conforming and instead challenge these expectations in order to embrace all sides of their identity without judgment.
The film highlights how damaging it can be for young boys when they are encouraged not to express emotion or feel vulnerable because it goes against what society deems as “masculine” (Malson & Platow, 2016). It also emphasizes the need for men and boys alike to foster authentic friendships with one another so as not allow themselves succumb to toxic masculinity norms (Winget et al., 2017). Additionally, The Mask You Live In asks us examine our own behavior towards others regardless of gender and understand why treating someone differently based on sex is wrong (Winget et al., 2017).
In conclusion, I strongly agree with the message the movie conveys because it has become increasingly important within today’s society that we start calling out oppressive trends such as misogyny while being cognizant of our own words and actions. Ultimately, this will help create an inclusive environment where everyone can feel accepted just as they are no matter who they identify as.
