By 1968, the philosophy of behaviorism was developed and laid a strong foundation for the more modern conceptualization of the science of applied behavior analysis. In 1968, Baer, Wolf, & Risley published the first article in the first volume of the newly minted Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. In this article, they described seven essential dimensions of applied behavior analysis that guide research and practice to this day. Many mark this event as the emergence of applied behavior analysis as a field. For this discussion, please review the assigned readings and the video in this unit.
Please respond to the following:
• Name and describe each of the seven dimensions of ABA.
• Describe Baer et al.’s (1968) rationale for presenting these as the foundation for sound research and practice in ABA.
• What conclusions did Baer et al. (1987) reach when they reviewed the seven dimensions nearly 20 years later?
• Based on your readings and the assigned video, what future directions might be important to consider (if any) in development of the seven dimensions?
Name and describe each of the seven dimensions of ABA:
The seven dimensions of ABA are:
Baer et al.’s (1968) rationale for presenting these as the foundation for sound research and practice in ABA:
Baer et al. (1968) argued that the seven dimensions of ABA are essential for ensuring that research and practice in ABA are rigorous and effective. They believed that by following these dimensions, ABA practitioners can develop and implement interventions that are likely to be successful in improving the lives of individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.
Baer et al. (1987) review of the seven dimensions:
Nearly 20 years after publishing their original article, Baer et al. (1987) reviewed the seven dimensions of ABA to assess their continued relevance. They concluded that the seven dimensions remained essential for sound research and practice in ABA. However, they also acknowledged that the field of ABA had evolved significantly since 1968, and that some of the dimensions needed to be updated to reflect these changes. For example, they suggested that the term “behavioral” be broadened to include cognitive and social processes, and that the term “technological” be updated to reflect advances in technology.
Future directions for the seven dimensions of ABA:
Based on my readings and the assigned video, I believe that the following future directions might be important to consider in the development of the seven dimensions of ABA:
Conclusion:
The seven dimensions of ABA are a foundational framework for research and practice in ABA. They have helped to ensure that ABA is a rigorous and effective science. As the field of ABA continues to evolve, it is important to consider how the seven dimensions can be updated to reflect new knowledge and priorities. By doing so, we can ensure that ABA remains a valuable tool for improving the lives of individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.
